Lovely little cafe, ran by two ladies that are very welcoming and down to Earth. Really really reasonable prices for the locations and food you get. Perfect for a breakfast before work or a quick stop for lunch.

The Lyric newsagent and Cafe has been open for over 50 years and as the name suggests it was formerly a Newsagents with a cafe in the rear of the shop, nowadays it's just a cafe. The shop frontage is still the same as it's ever been giving it a genuine vintage look. Inside it's been modernised at some point, it's a nice clean well lit place with a variety of tables of varying sizes.I found the atmosphere warm and cozy, a friendly place that seems to have a good following of regular customer's.Table service is provided and I also found the staff very friendly and welcoming and going by some of the conversations I overheard between the staff and their customers happy to oblige with some nice friendly banter, which was really nice to see and really added value to my experience of eating here. The menu is quite extensive and covers most of the traditional cafe offerings, from breakfasts, main meals and hot and cold buns and beverages, very reasonable prices considering it's location, nothing overly fancy or overpriced in terms of the food offerings but it's popularity speaks volumes about this place. Parking is available in some side streets and there's also two multi storey car parks near by,its also on a major bus route. The wheelchair access is reasonable but there's not a great deal of room to manoeuvre given narrowness of the shop, it also has it's own restroom and I believe that it's cash only here. They have a 5 food hygiene rating. Food review August 2019. I opted for a traditional roasted chicken dinner and a mug of tea. I received a good plate comprising of a good selection of fresh vegetables, a good amount of chicken breast which was well cooked and tender, stuffing and a Yorkshire pudding (frozen variety),good home style cooking. I paid £4.95 for my meal which included the tea.A very good meal at a very reasonable price. I was impressed with both the food and the quality of the service here. Good value for money. Food review October 2019. I paid the Lyric cafe another visit today,I opted for the Cottage Pie, the meal arrived after a short wait and as experienced on my previous visit the food was good. The Pie was a good sized portion and both the filling and topping of mashed potatoes were very tasty, accompanied by a selection of fresh vegetables and gravy. Good food at the very affordable price of £4.95 which included a mug of tea. On the way out I bumped into a friend who had just ordered a nice looking Chicken salad which for the same price. Food review March 2020. I paid another visit today,I opted for roast pork, a nicely prepared plate of food arrived after a short while, comprising of some nicely roasted slices of pork loin, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, carrots, cabbage, swede, peas and both roasted and mashed potatoes, everything was fresh except the Yorkshire pud and peas,a very good meal for the price, the pork particularly good. Nice friendly table and counter service. There's been a small increase in prices since my last visit. I paid £5.75 for my meal which included a mug of tea. Update January 2022. Popped in here for lunch today, back to normal in terms of opening times and service, I opted for a regular roast chicken lunch and a mug of tea, all the food was very good and piping hot, nice friendly table service. There's been another small increase in prices, I paid £6.50 for my meal and tea. Update November 2022. I paid another visit today,I opted for steak pie with vegetables and a mug of tea, they were very busy today and I to wait a while for my meal which was understandable, the food was as good as usual a nice selection vegetables and a slice of pie which was very tasty. I paid £6.50 for my meal and tea. Update January 2024. Popped in for lunch today, ordered a regular chicken lunch and a tea, nice friendly service, the food arrived promptly, still a good sized meal with plenty of vegetables and chicken, and still good value at £7.50 for my meal and tea .
